The ‘Concert Allegro’ is Elgar’s most substantial piano work, and yet was unpublished in his lifetime. The score was left full of revisions and not in a final, definitive form. Throughout the manuscript are markings for ‘piano’ and ‘orchestra’ and the title page is altered to ‘for pianoforte + orchestra’. Elgar obviously toyed with the idea of making the work into a mini concerto. This arrangement by Iain Farrington adds a new chamber orchestral role to Elgar’s original piano piece.
