Edward Elgar's Variations for Orchestra, Op 36, were composed in late 1898 and early 1899, and have become known as the 'Enigma Variations'. The piece features a wistful Theme followed by 14 variations that are character portraits of friends of the composer. Variation 9 is titled 'Nimrod', and depicts August Johannes Jaeger, who worked at the music publisher Novello. He was one of Elgar's greatest supporters for many years, and the piece is full of noble and deep emotion. This piano arrangement is based on Elgar's own version, elaborated to make a full and sonorous pianistic statement.
