Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was known in his lifetime as “The Waltz King”, who composed a vast number of dances, as well as operettas and ballet. Perpetuum mobile was composed in 1861 and is subtitled "A musical joke". It displays the individual virtuosity of the different players of the orchestra, over a repetitive accompaniment. The piece can be repeated without a proper end, usually until the conductor says "un so weiter" (and so on).
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Harp, 2 Percussion (timpani, suspended cymbal, triangle, glockenspiel), Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass (15 players)
