Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was known in his lifetime as “The Waltz King”, who composed a vast number of dances, as well as operettas and ballet. Die Fledermaus is Strauss's most popular operetta, composed in 1873. The Overture uses a number of the operetta’s main tunes in a lively and joyous mood, especially an energetic waltz. This arrangement aims to create a full orchestral picture from a smaller ensemble, and is the complete work without cuts.
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Harp, 2 Percussion (timpani, snare drum), Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass (15 players)
