Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was known in his lifetime as “The Waltz King”, who composed a vast number of dances, as well as operettas and ballet. His operetta Cagliostro in Wien (Cagliostro in Vienna) was composed in 1875. Strauss created this orchestral piece using material from the operetta, using a polka style. It includes an evocation of a hunt, which inspired the title Auf der Jagd (On the Hunt).
