George Gershwin (1898-1937) composed his Piano Concerto in 1925, as a commission from the conductor Walter Damrosch for the New York Symphony Orchestra. It was titled 'Concerto in F' and is full of jazz, Broadway and Romantic influences. The music bursts with melodic brilliance, rhythmic energy and bluesy harmony. This arrangement reduces the symphony orchestra to a Classical chamber size, while maintaining the colourful percussion.
Instrumentation: Flute (Piccolo), Oboe, 2 Clarinets, Bassoon, 2 Horns, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion (4 players: Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Wood Block, Whip, Crash Cymbals, Suspended Cymbal, Triangle, Tam-tam, Glockenspiel, Xylophone), Piano solo, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass. Strings must be a minimum of 2.2.2.2.1.
