Franz Liszt was fascinated by Hungarian gypsy music and folksong, and composed a series of piano works incorporating much of this musical material. They were published as Hungarian Rhapsodies in 1851-53, and display tremendous pianistic virtuosity as well as national character. The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 is the most famous of the set, and uses the csárdás dance style in two contrasting slow and fast sections. It has become popular through numerous arrangements, as well as being featured in a number of American cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. This arrangement is for alto saxophone and piano and is a showpiece for both instruments.
