One of the most famous piano showpieces, Islamey is legendary for its technical difficulties and Russian exoticism. Balakirev based his work on two folk themes, blending them into a colourful work of brilliant virtuosity. Presented here in an arrangement for chamber orchestra by Iain Farrington, the orchestration aims to keep the virtuoso nature of the original, filling it with a folk-like Russian colour.
