Richard Wagner (1813-1883) composed the overture to his opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) in 1861, before writing the rest of the opera in 1862-1867. It is a light-hearted and optimistic opera about a group of 16th century singers in Nuremberg and their singing contests. The Prelude introduces themes from the opera, combining them in polyphony to create a quasi-Baroque soundworld. This arrangement is for chamber ensemble and is the complete work unabridged.
Instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, piano, violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass (strings can be single parts or a section of around 4, 3, 2, 2, 1)
