Frederick Delius (1862-1934) was an English composer who lived much of his life in France, including a number of years in Paris. He composed his orchestral work Paris in 1899-1900, and it is subtitled The Song of a Great City. There is no precise programme for the piece, but it depicts certain scenes and impressions of the city's nightlife. These include atmospheric music of mystery and romance, alongside lively sounds of parties and pleasure. There are several bells towards the end as morning approaches, and the crowds disperse.
Instrumentation: flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion (timpani, cymbal, castanets, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel), harp, violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass (minimum 4, 4, 3, 3, 1)
