Johann Strauss Snr. (1804-1849) composed his Radetzky March, Op. 228 in 1848 and it was dedicated to Field Marshal Radetzky. Strauss was commissioned tocompose the piece to celebrate Austria's recent military victory in Italy, led by Radetzky. At early performances of the March, Austrian soldiers would stamp and clap along, and this tradition is continued at the annual New Year's Day concert in Vienna. It remains one of Strauss's most popular compositions, with much of his fame now eclipsed by the music of his son Johann Strauss II.
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Cymbals, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass (13 players). A larger string section can be used if preferred.
