CONTENTS: Introduction (Worcester Castle), Toccata (Tournament), Fugue (The Cathedral), Minuet (Commandery), Coda
Elgar composed 'The Severn Suite' in 1930, originally for brass band. Most of the music was based on earlier sketches dating back to his youth, with the movement titles evoking the history of his native Worcester. During 1931-2, Elgar scored the suite for symphony orchestra and recorded it in 1932. Elgar's friend Ivor Atkins arranged the brass band version for organ, giving it the title 'Organ Sonata No. 2'. However, Atkins made a number of alterations and cuts to the work. This arrangement by Iain Farrington is an unabridged version of the complete orchestral suite.
